In 1994, British Coal confirm the closure of 4 more pits, Stephen Milligan, a Conservative MP, is found dead at home, his death was due to autoerotic asphyxiation, police in Gloucester begin excavations at 25 Cromwell Road- the home of Fred & Rosemary West– they were later convicted of the murder of 12 young women, the IRA release three successful mortar attacks at Heathrow airport, women are ordained as priests in England for the first time, Ayrton Senna dies at 34 when he crashes at the San Marino Grand Prix, the Channel Tunnel officially opens, Love is All Around by Wet Wet Wet remains at number one in the charts for 15 weeks– the longest a British act has ever consecutively stayed at no.1, leader of the Labour party- John Smith dies unexpectedly of a heart attack, Tony Blair wins the Labour party leadership election, the IRA declares a ceasefire, the first UK National Lottery takes place, 0.5% of the UK population now have access to the internet, new Sunday trading laws allow shops to open on a Sunday in the UK, intermittent civil wars take place in Rwanda after the assignation of President Habyarimana, Nelson Mandela becomes president of South Africa, Brazil wins 1994 World Cup in America, OJ Simpson flees police in his car, Lisa Marie Presley marries Michael Jackson and Kurt Cobain commits suicide. The films Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Shawshank Redemption are all released. I turn 18 years old and I guess, I officially became an adult (still waiting to actually become one though).
Oh my God, this has to be another of my favourite years this week. There were so many good tunes this year and I had to narrow this list down from about 30 songs. It was quite the impossible task. Regulars such as Blur, Tori and Kylie appear again, but there’s quite a few first appearances too. Here’s my 10 favourite songs from 1994 in no particular order.

9. Stay Another Day by East 17 (this song was released around the time I split up with a boyfriend, so it had me crying every time I heard it. Years down the line I found out that Tony Mortimer wrote it about his brother’s death, so now I still have problems listening to it without feeling emotional. On a lighter note, the video is worth watching just for the lads’ earnest performance in it)
10. Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins
Whilst Tori and Kylie are close runners up, it’s the Smashing Pumpkins* that are my favourites this week. Which is yours?

*I chose the Smashing Pumpkins as not only is it a fantastic song, but it also profoundly reminds me of a friend who I sadly lost in 1994 around the time of the song’s release. I just wanted to mention this as a loving tribute to her.

Since the kids were little I used the 3 hour trip to Brum to see my parents as a time to educate them in real music! From my bollywood and bhangra classics, to disco, pop, r’n’b and swing. Even Chuck a bit of Kenyan music, the Rat Pack and other likes from my rather eclectic collection of likes!!!!
Now, at 10 and 12, they are trying to educate Me!!!!!
But at least there is an awareness of the good stuff too!

Oh very good. I love it. A musical education is definitely essential for our kids (whether they like it or not ha). I’ve been making mine listen to these playlists every week and she’s really getting into them 😍

Excellent. I really hate to sound like I’m showing off in anyway, but I did meet them a couple of times. Liam was an absolute wanker (I do find him hilarious though), but Noel was alright and give me several of his cigarettes!

Oh dear another very tricky one – this was a great year and I remember it vividly. Got to be Blur and Kylie for me – two great songs, and I remember getting drunk and sweaty at night clubs listening to them. Happy times.

Omg again so hard! Well Supersonic by Oasis, because my middle lad adored and still does Oasis and he still sends me links accompied by listen to this!… Tori Amos love love. But Zombie by the Cranberries stands out for me from that year.

’94 was a great year for music….very hard to pick just one from your playlist, but Blur’s Girls and Boys reminds me of many fun nights out down the pub, so I’ll go with that one!

That Smashing Pumpkins track is fab! Cornflake Girl reminds me of my aborted time at 6th Form college, but Pulp wins it for me (although Have You Seen Her Lately from the same album is my all time favourite Pulp track 😉 )

Finding it hard to pick between Pulp and Kylie. His n Hers I played over and over….but Confide in Me was just beautiful, and still is ❤ I can't recall that exact Smashing Pumpkins song, so will go and listen to it now (perhaps I will remember it when I hear it)…I'm sorry to hear about the loss of a friend but I hope the song still brings you the good times 🙂 x

Yes! His ‘n’ Hers was so very wonderful. Agree that Confide in Me is stunning. One of the most underrated songs ever. Thanks love. I still very much enjoy that song. Thankfully I can listen to it now without crying and appreciate it for its merit.

Girls and Boys!! I played all of the songs, and though Cornflake Girl is lovely, there’s just something about that Blur one that just got me going this morning. Love the playlist–even more so that my husband came out of the bedroom at 7am and says, “What, you rockin out out here or what?”

My 18 year old students had never heard of The Smashing Pumpkins. I had to put Hopkins aside to educate them.

I was never able to choose between Blur and Oasis then, so there’s no chance I can now. That photo of a zillion cops “chasing” OJ is hilarious!

Too many favs here…Blur (always beat Oasis for me), Pulp and East 17….this last song transports me back to working nights – a full 7 stretch – at Charing Cross over Christmas. The song was number 1 so was played regularly in the early hours, keeping us company as patients slept and the rest of the world partied!! Sharing to facebook x

Thank you SO much. Yes Blur always beat Oasis for me too. I read that Damon was the “thinking woman’s bit of chocolate” haha. So naturally, I assumed that me a thinking woman 😄 aah yes I remember East 17 being no.1 at Christmas. Your night shifts back then sound somewhat gruelling.

What a huge year for the music industry! Not only in terms of music, but the lives of musicians. TLC and Beastie Boys were two of my absolute favs. I love reading your posts and reminiscing of years gone by. Thanks for always bringing those memories back. 🙂

This list just shows me how much I was distracted in the early 90’s! This is the year I got married and I don’t recall listening to many of these at the time. My faves would have to be TLC and Kylie (lovely Kylie) (as she is known in my household!)

Ah yes. I think we call her lovely Kylie in this household too. I’m not surprised you were distracted if this was the year you got wedded. Weddings are pretty distracting.
