In 1993, James Bulger a 2-year-old is murdered by two 10-year-old boys, unemployment reaches 3,000,000, IRA bombs are planted and explode at gas holders in Warrington, the IRA bomb Warrington again this time in the town centre and kill a 3-year-old and a 12-year-old and injure 50, black London teenager Stephen Lawrence is stabbed to death in London in a racially motivated attack, massive IRA bombs explode in London destroying a medieval church, badly damaging the NatWest tower and Liverpool Street tube station and killing one person, the government declare the end of the recession, the Queen opens Buckingham Palace to the public for the first time, Bill Clinton becomes the president of the United States, Islamic Fundamentalists bomb the World Trade Centre killing 6 and injuring over a thousand, tennis player Monica Seles is stabbed by a spectator– an obsessed Steffi Graff fan, Slovakia gains independence when Czechoslovakia divides into Slovakia and the Czech Republic, the films Schindler’s List, Groundhog Day, Jurassic Park and Mrs Doubtfire were all released and I turned 17-years-old.
1993 is another fantastic year for music. And oh yes, there’s Blur again, there’s REM again and there’s Queen Bjork again. Here, in no particular order are the top ten tunes from 1993 (Spotify playlist at the end).

I remember bouncing to Jump Around and wondering if collectively we were going to go through the floor – you could really feel the building move!

Yes! Whenever that song came on it would guarantee every single person would get on the dance floor. Am so surprised the floor didn’t just give way!

There was one club in particular, Brown’s in Coventry, the dance floor was upstairs, but was just floorboards. It was hectic, I think they had to stop playing that tune because dust would come down and cover the peeps & their drinks below.

Oh gosh sooooo hard to choose my favourite Björk. I almost put Human Behaviour in this list, but changed to Venus at the last minute! My favourite album of Björk is Homogenic, but I’d have to think long & hard about my all time favourite track of hers. R.E.M. would be Losing My Religion for me.

Yes that one is Sooo deep, Loosing my religion, but Smily Happy has many memories 😶 Homogenic is my favourite too I played it to death when I first got the CD. … favourite tracks are always hard to pick 💜

Oh! Yes the lyrics are so sad, a brilliant song about feeling depressed or having a mental illness… She is just an amazing poet!

At the risk of irony, I have to say I saw Groundhog Day over and over again in the 90s. The character arc for Bill Murray struck me. If we all could do the same day over and over again, what would I do? What would I learn? Inevitably, I would wish I’d offered more present kindness, found more connection, worried less, gave more. Now I want to watch that movie all over again!
I know it’s not music related–but that movie just struck me based on my current mood. And I couldn’t help wanting to share.

I love your thoughts on it, Angela! It’s one of my favourite films, so your comment is really interesting. I often wonder this. How would I have done things differently if I could do this day all over again? I think the answer would mostly be: spend less time on my phone (and inevitably then be more productive) and worry less about others are thinking of me. It was just a fantastic idea for a film. It also has that Sliding Doors element to it too, which I also often wonder about.

I know! Sliding Doors is another good one (I cut my hair like Gwenyth in that film–couldn’t help it).
I wish I could always keep in mind the question of, “In this moment, am I doing the thing that serves my purpose/goal/life/love best?” But, I fail all the time. It’s a glimpse rather than a conscious omni-present thought.
One thing though–I do remember seeing the HUGE table full of food from Groundhog Day. I was both horrified and jealous. I’m sure poor Andie McDowell thought the same!

Ooooohh tough one. Nice to see those edgier songs coming out. Was always a real lover of Blur and the gorgeous Damon. (Age has not been kind) it’s going to have to be Bjork, Jump around – weeeeooooo!! Weeeeeooooo!! – and REM

I’m thinking this might be a year I’ve picked slightly more obscure tunes. I was very much obsessed with any band that the NME wrote about back then.

Ha ha ha! I had the New Order single, Regret, and the Bjork album, but didn’t actually own anything else from this list. However, just because your choices are bit lesser known doesn’t mean they’re not good, and they obviously have significance for you.

Not one of my favourite lists of yours to be honest. Will choose Bjork or R.E.M. I think. Still some good songs though.

At the time, a bit but I think I picked up a bit more later. I do like Blur and Oasis but love Sleeper. I liked a few singl;es but it wasn’t somethign that I dived into. I was a bit older though lol.
