OK brace yourself, the news doesn’t really get any better during this year. In 1990, hurricane force winds kill over 50 people in the UK, the IRA bomb Leicester city injuring 3 people, Princess Eugenie is born, riots opposing the Poll Tax take place across London, four soldiers are killed by an IRA bomb in County Down, riots take place in Strangeway prison which then prompts riots to take place in other prisons across the UK, an army recruit is shot dead and two others are injured by an IRA gunman in Staffordshire, an IRA bomb explodes at the base of the London Stock Exchange building, an IRA car bomb kills a British MP, British hostages in Iraq are paraded on TV, the whole of the UK enters a recession, Margaret Thatcher announces her resignation as Leader of the Conservative party and therefore as Prime Minister- she was the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century, John Major becomes Prime Minister, Channel Tunnel workers from the UK and France meet establishing land connection between the UK and mainland Europe for the first time in 8,000 years, Roald Dahl dies at 74, Tim Berners-Lee publishes his proposal for the World Wide Web, the demolition of the Berlin Wall officially begins and East & West Germany are reunited, a stampede of religious pilgrims in Mecca leaves 1,400 people dead, a fire in an illegal social club in New York kills 87 people, an earthquake in the Philippines kills over 1,600 people, Twin Peaks premiers on TV and Nelson Mandela is released from prison (see something good DID happen in 1990). The films Ghost, Misery, Home Alone and Goodfellas are released. I turn 14 years old.
Oh and also, in case you’re all wondering, this is what I looked like in 1990 and I think we can all agree that I was quite the catch:

So this week, I give you not one, but two female British rappers (yep Brits can rap, a post on British rap is literally brewing as you read this post). Also, our George makes another appearance (as does Madge and our Kylie). The nineties are here and they’re looking mighty fine.

So, whilst Madge and Beats International are very close runners up, it’s Battersea’s finest Monie Love that is my absolute favourite. I can still do the whole rap word perfectly (this may come as a surprise to you, but despite all of my many, MANY talents- I can’t actually rap). So, pray tell me, which is your 1990 favourite?

I think There She Goes is my favourite song from 1990. Thankfully there were some good things in 1990 – quite alot of bad stuff!

So although released in ‘Dec 89, it was the following year before my top tune became a hit and Carter USM went on their 30 something tour. Big deal, you say except when they got to Coventry, there was this daft N Irish girl who climbed up onto the stage with them, danced for a while before stage diving into the crowd. So for that reason Sherriff Fat Man is my hit of 1990 and possibly the entire decade.

Oh what a brilliant story! I love that you stage dived at a Carter USM gig. I met Jimbob once (or was it the other one? Can never remember which was which) and we ended up having a huge argument about Blur’s credentials. We bumped into to each other again later on that night and carried on the argument. It was quite amusing for all our friends. I don’t think he had a terrible time arguing with me as at the end of the evening he said “I like you a lot, but you’re wrong about Blur”. Anyway, I definitely prefer your Carter story. No wonder that song means a lot to you.

I think that pic of you is perfect! You look adorable. The news was;t good in the 1990s huh? I do think the release of Nelson Mandela is a bright spot.I haven’t heard a lot of these songs, so will have to play it later and let you know!

Oh you are wonderful! I love that you give so much time to these little posts of mine. I hope you like some of the songs on the playlist. They’re very 90s ha (oh and thank you- you reminded me to make my playlist public as I had accidentally left it as “secret”). Yes, thankfully the release of Mandela was particularly cheering amongst such gloom. Haha I’m glad you liked that photo of me. Needless to say, that was not my natural hair colour!

I owned four of those singles (all on cassette!) I didn’t have it at the time, but later went on to really like the Monie Love album. I had Ring My Bell on 7″! I loved it. I also had that Monie Love album on vinyl too (in fact I still have it) and it was great album. She was bit of an inspiration to me back then really. A bit different from your shiny, perfect popstar (though obviously I still like my popstars too). Which of these did you have on -ahem- cassette single?

I had Vogue, Step Back In Time (which remains the only Kylie single I ever purchased!), Freedom 90, and Nothing Compares 2 U – but I later upgraded to Sinead’s album.

My favorite here is There She Goes by The La’s. In 93 it was covered by The Boo Radley’s for the soundtrack of a little known Mike Myers movie called So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Wow! A top list for the start of the 90’s! Kylie is still young Kylie, Madge is ,well Madge, and Betty Boo is your number 1. I preferred Hey DJ myself, but still a good track. Nice!

Hey DJ was ace. Oh I’m thinking I probably shouldn’t number my lists in these posts. I list them in no particular order, so Betty Boo isn’t my favourite. I put which is my favourite in the paragraph below the list. I’m thinking I should change to bullet points- I can see how that might confuse.
