In 1992, IRA bombs in Omagh kills 7 and injures more, the Queen commemorates her Ruby Jubilee, the Duke and Duchess of York (Andy & Fergie) separate, the Conservative party are re-elected for the fourth consecutive term, the IRA detonate two bombs in central London killing 3 people, the first female Speaker of the House of Commons is elected- Betty Boothroyd, the Olympics takes place in Barcelona, two IRA bombs explode in London, but no one is injured, the government closes a third of all mines, the IRA force a taxi driver to drive to Downing Street where they detonate a bomb- again no one is hurt, the Church of England vote to allow women to become priests, a fire breaks out in Windsor Castle causing over £50 million worth of damage, another IRA bomb is detonated in Manchester city centre causing millions of pounds of damage and injuring 65 people, Prince Charles and Diana separate, 4 people are injured by an IRA bomb on Oxford St, London, Euro Disney opens in France, rioting breaks out across Los Angeles following the acquittal of four white police officers accused of beating Rodney King, Mike Tyson is convicted of rape and the Maastricht Treaty is signed founding the European Union…
The films Reservoir Dogs and Basic Instinct are released and I turn sweet sixteen.
I loved 1992. In 1992 I did my GCSEs, left school and started at Henley College where I did my A-Levels, met Stephen and went to my first ever Glastonbury festival (the first of muddy many). At Glastonbury, I saw Shakespear’s Sister, Blur, Joan Armatrading, Primal Scream (you can read about how that went here) and PJ Harvey (and many, many others). I ended 1992 by attending a Blur gig and gate crashing their afterparty in a recording studio. 1992 marked the start of my regular and slightly obsessive attendance of gigs around London. Brixton Academy, the Town & Country club (later the Forum) and the Astoria were all regular haunts of mine. Here, in no particular order are my favourite songs from 1992.

7. Pretend We’re Dead by L7 (thought I’d add the video of L7’s infamous 1992 appearance on the brilliant/awful The Word. Anyone around my age and from the UK will remember watching this programme half-cut on a Friday after the pubs closed)

My favourite song from this lot is Tori Amos. That song is just stunning and I still have to stop what I’m doing and just listen whenever I hear it now. Sooooooo, which one of these gems is your favourite? Please someone say Boyz II Men…

OH my goodness! What a different world we live in today. This dates me, but I saw the Sugar Cubes at Red Rock Amphitheater in Colorado in my senior year(1989). They were opening for New Order. What a ride!

Oh crikey…the Word! I was just getting into it when they cancelled it..i LOVED the Girlie Show that kinda followed on from it. I like every single one of these loads. That Boyz 2 Men monologue actually equals sex. It’s marvellous. So that has my vote, yeeaaahhh! X

I remember being part of a dance group at school, and we put together some random interpretative stuff to that Shakespeare’s Sister song. I loved the song but my dancing was atrocious!

Sorry that it took me two days to get here. Wow this was a great year! A lot of people don’t think the 90’s has a lot of great music but if you know where to look, it’s there. I have to go with The Cure as my fave here. They’re one band I’d love to see live that I’ve never had the chance.

I started listening to this playlist on Friday and am having trouble finding my favorite. Tori spent many afternoons with me in my bedroom senior year of high school. But, I can’t resist Boys II Men. Which was definitely one of the songs we played as we drove around in my Honda Accord looking for something fun to do. And I loved listening to the Sugarcubes again. I haven’t heard that song in a long long while and sang it as I folded my laundry.
On a totally separate note: I can’t say how sorry I am to be reminded about all the IRA bombings. They just seemed to punctuate every other line in the history review. Too much. We must have a better way. We must be smarter than that, aren’t we?

Oh I’m so glad you liked this list. And for some reason I just knew you’d be a Tori fan too. She was my best friend through adolescence and into my 20s and I still consult her on things from time to time today. When I finally saw her live, I almost cried throughout the concert.
Yes as I’ve written the history bits every week, it’s been pretty horrific to be reminded of how bad things were with the IRA. I remember it being awful. Bomb scares were a regular part of life in the U.K. as a kid, but I just don’t remember it being as bad as I’m rediscovering with these posts. And the worst thing is, I’m not including all IRA terrorism that happened, it just started to seem too much if I included everything. You’re so right. There has to be a better way. Boyz II Men were my absolute favorite. My husband actually played a few of their songs on YouTube the other day. He had all of their tapes, CDs, etc. Still love them, oh, and him too. 😉

My wife is a massive Tori Amos fan so she would surely choose that track, and for me it would have to be Stay. I didn’t get into Bjork until the following year….

Yep, south west london with easy access to central London. So lucky because have been able to see so many gigs so easily. One day when Prince was doing his hit and run shows I just though screw it, left work (working fromn home) and queued for six hours! Totally worth it!

I am so unbelievably jealous of you seeing Prince. He must’ve been just phenomenal. South West London is one area of London that I never lived. Lived in the North, the West and South East, but never SW.

Always lived here. So great! Yep I consider myself lucky to have seen Prince live about 6 times over the years in Places like the O2 and the Electric Ballroom in Camden. Even got my daughter to a show at Koko’s and she will remember it forever. Still in mourning…
