The Mary Rose. King Henry VIII’s flagship.
Events in 1982 include Argentina invading the Falklands, Channel 4 is launched in the UK (wow we had a whole 4 channels to choose from back then), the Queen celebrates her Pearl Jubilee, the Eurovision Song Contest is held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Prince William is born, a man manages to break into the Queen’s bedroom, the Mary Rose flagship of Henry VIII is raised from the Solent, the IRA detonate two bombs in central London killing 8 soldiers and 7 horses and wounding 47 people and the film E.T. was released. I celebrated my 6th Birthday.
Straight up apologies, for Come on Eileen, but I’ve heard you far too many times to still love you as much as I did. Here’s my top ten tracks of 1982 regardless.

A lot of great artists but for me, none of those songs make my list. Centerfold by J. Geils, Tainted Love by Soft Cell and 867-5309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone are some of my favorites from 82

Oh my God- I’d completely forgotten about Centrefold! That brings back memories! Tainted Love was in my 1981 list- maybe released a year earlier over here?

Pass the Dutchy has special memories . I remember finding the lyrics in the Sun paper. (Yes I know… sorry about the rag I used to read!) and trying to sing along!!!

Aaah another song that my brother & I loved. We used to sing it, innocently passing the “dutchie” to each other. Without knowing what a dutchie was of course!

Oh how I love the 80’s! Tight Fit was giving it their all in that video, weren’t they! I love ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, it was one of my favourites. Yazoo were brilliant too, oh, and I bought the um, 12-inch version of ‘Sexual Healing!’ Fantastic choices as always Hayley, you put a huge smile on my face 🙂

Whoa-Goombay Dance Band. Never heard of them and when I listened, I’m sorry to say, I kinda know why. And the leotards in the Lion Sleeps Tonight almost made me spit out my coffee. I definitely owned one of those, I’m sure of it. Happy 6th birthday little 1982 Hayley!
Can I just also say that the fact that horses died in the IRA bombing really struck me. It’s a tragedy that anyone died, and I’m glad you included that it wasn’t just the humans we mourn.

Haha. Yes the Goombay Dance Band were this terrible German band, but I had to include this song as it was one of mine & my brother’s favourite songs from our childhood. I know, those 7 horses dying struck me too. I always feel animals and children are the most innocent victims of all. Thanks Angela (so glad you’re enjoying the history bits too. I’m really enjoying researching those bits) x

Worst track was Golden Brown until I got to the Goombay Dance Band!! But having said that it is such a catchy tune…
I don’t know if its the video but Pass The Dutchie always makes me think of long hot summers of my youth. Life seemed so much less complicated then. Nostalgia goggles misting over lol. Another great list!

Yep Golden Brown always gets slated, but have affection for it as it always reminds me of my childhood. Nothing like a song about heroin to remind you of your childhood! Haha and yes same goes for the Goombay Dance Band, it strongly reminds me of me & my brother, so it had to go in. Life was definitely a lot less complicated then. Cheers for popping by.
