Every Friday, I’m publishing my personal top ten songs from a single year. Last week, I started with 1976 and this week it’s the turn of 1977.
For previous top ten tunes, please click on the year: 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019

Silver Jubilee street party
In 1977, Elvis died aged 42, Red Rum wins the Grand National for the 3rd time, there were street parties all across the UK for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, Jimmy Carter is elected President of the United States and Star Wars was released and broke all box office records. Aaaaand yours truly turned 1 year old.

So, here’s my personal top ten tracks from 1977 and you may notice two artists that also featured in 1976’s list (they’re two of my all time favourite artists, so you may have to get used to it). Spotify playlist at end as per.
- Lust for Life by Iggy Pop

2. Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder

3. No More Heroes by The Stranglers

4. Psycho Killer by Talking Heads
5. Heroes by David Bowie
6. Dreams by Fleetwood Mac

7. Uptown Top Ranking by Althea and Donna

8. Oh Bondage Up Yours by X-Ray Spex

9. Daddy Cool by Boney M

10. Nobody Does it Better by Carly Simon

Which one do you rate the most? Bowie is undoubtedly my favourite track here.
See you cats next week for 1978.
Love Boney M…..sooo cool Daddy Cool 😉

Awesome idea! While I adore Bowie, the song has been tainted for me thanks to commercial use. Psycho Killer would be my fave in this bunch. Oh, and have you ever heard the parody song, Psycho Chicken (What the Cluck!)?

Yes, I know what you mean about Bowie. Every time it’s used for commercial reasons, I think “no please don’t ruin this song for me”. Psycho Killer is such a great track. Haha no I hadn’t heard Psycho Chicken. It’s absolutely brilliant and strangely works. Haha x

It totally works – LOL! The Fools are local boys who made good. I got to see them perform at a club in my hometown back in the 80s. They’re just as silly in person! This was one of their bigger hits –

Yeah, I was hoping you’d have Talking Heads here, the first thing I think of when I hear 1977 is the Talking Heads “77” album which is almost perfect
imo 😊 I really like every track you’ve picked here, 100% would hit the dance floor for every one.

So many to choose from, here again, Hayley. Bowie, Daddy Cool, Stranglers, Sir Duke, and Fleetwood Mac too! Thanks for sharing these. 🙂

Such a great choice, isn’t it? 1977 was a good year for music.

Yes it was, mind you I love most of the 70s and 80s. I am looking forward to next week’s 🙂

So, have to agree with the Bowie. But both Carly Simon and Fleetwood Mack have a place in my heart. One yearly old for s little Hayley! I’d have been almost 4 around this time in 1977. I think Talking Heads might have freaked me out at this tender age-but I sure loved them in high school ten years later!

Ha yes I didn’t get into Talking Heads until I was about 16. ❤️ Bowie, Carly & Fleetwood.

1977, what a year. My first concert was Aerosmith and Walk This Way was popular back then. It was from their Toys in the Attic album.

That’s an excellent tune too! The late 70s was such a strong time for music.

Quite some variety there: Boney M to The Stranglers! You can’t beat Bowie.

Seeing hits from Stevie Wonder and David Bowie brings me back. Realizing that 1977 was a long time ago makes me think I’m gettin old.

Hard to believe US and UK lists can be so different…but browsing through three of these lists has been fun. Right. Back to work now. Thank you for sharing.
