Let me introduce you to a new weekly music feature here at Just Another Blog from a Woman. Every Friday I’m going to post a top ten list of songs from a single year, starting from 1976 through to the present year. Why start from 1976, you ask? Well, that’s the year I was born and I had to find a way to make this all about me, me, me. However, as quite a few of you are probably around my age (and even if you’re not), I’m hoping all you music lovers will appreciate some of the tunes I throw your way.

A few people taking advantage of the heatwave of 1976
So, starting with the year where we had the worst drought on record in the UK, the first concorde flight took place, rioting started in Notting Hill, the Cod Wars happened and the film Rocky was released. Oh yeah and yours truly was born (the most significant event quite frankly). Here we have my personal top ten songs from 1976 (in no particular order).

Absolutely. Its amazing how we are still listening to and enjoying 40, 50, 60 year old music! That’s like me listening to 1930’s music when I was 10!

I was 10 but I remember nearly all of these. I love December 1963, Golden Years, Queen of course, and Abba too! I think thiss is going to be a very popular feauture on yur blog, especially with me! 🙂

Oh I am about to show my age. I was 18 that year. I remember all these with great fondness, but was more into albums: Genesis’ Trick of the Tail, Steely Dan’s The Royal Scam, Eagles’ Hotel California were top of my list

Jolene is such a classic song that I think spans across generations. Dancing Queen always makes me think of my Mam she’s a huge ABBA fan. Look forward to more posts like this 😊

It’s SUCH a tune. No matter how much it gets overplayed nobody can deny it’s the perfect pop song.

And some proper disco standards there too. The 70s disco revival was quite the thing when I was a teenager, so I don’t mind a lot of that stuff. Much like the 90s revival is happening now. Time is so weird and confusing and I am gonna sit and cry now 😂

Haha I know what you mean. I remember in the year 2000 someone handing me a flyer for a 90s revival night. I was so confused. I mean the 90s had been about a month ago. It was hardly a revival. More of a continuation. Anyway, the 90s still feel about a month ago to me.

I love this! I would have been 6 and I can remember my mum dancing to these, particularly Abba. In fact i have a great pic of her and me all dressed in 70s brown……my father in law was the junior aircraft engineer who hot footed it to London from Bristol wit the patent for the Concorde nose!

I’m listening to Dolly as I write this. I don’t know why, but I just dig this song. And there’s something about Dolly. I was two when 1976 rolled around. And as an American, the Cod Wars didn’t figure into the history I was told, though Rocky certainly did. I’m going to have to rectify that!
Bravo on the new feature. I love the idea. And you’re an excellent music curator. Along with smells, music evokes such strong emotions. Memories and wonder kind of mix together and remind me that where I was may not be where I am today; but I would not be where I am today, without being exactly where I was.

Thank you so much Angela for your thoughtful comment. You really are the queen of comments. It’s crazy to think we were once “at war” with such a lovely country as Iceland. Though I think it was more of a “confrontation” than a full on war. Am glad you love the idea of this series. I’ve written a few years up already and I’ve really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Hearing that music again really took me back to my childhood. Music from our pasts is really very emotive. What’s depressing is checking the events that happened in each respective year and concluding that the world has been bit of a mess for quite a while. What’s going on now, is nothing new. Sadly. Anyway, at least the music has always been great.

Oh my God (or OMG as the kids r apparently saying these days)! I was nodding along to all of these hits. oh what a night is still awesome. And, I will still follow that sage advice and keep playing that funky music…

Although these were released a few years before I was born, I’ve heard them over the years. I love Oh What a Night, and remember being out at the club dancing to it when they had their ‘disco nights’ 😀

As was born in 1976 I found this extremely interesting and also noted I LOVE LOVE LOVE most of these songs. Maybe my mum was playing them and I absorbed them in utero lol! Thanks. Great post

Totally Golden Years, though it actually came out in December 1975 – I remember, I was there, and in the 6th form!!! Makes me want to do my own list…. 🙂

Sshhh this was my sneaky way of getting a bit of Bowie into the list. Besides I figured if it was released at the end of ‘75, it was mainly played in ‘76. This is my logic anyway & im sticking to it haha. Yes do your own list. Such a good year for music.

OMG, 1976. That was the year that Frampton Comes Alive! came out. Loved that album. I was 14/15 that year. Finished middle school and June and was a Freshman in High School in September. Oh, and who can forget Tonight’s the Night by Rod Stewart?
