2017 Culture Review: the best of TV, Films and Music

Here’s my succinct cultural review of 2017. It’s been a great year for TV yet again, not so strong musically, but a few corkers nonetheless. I’ve only bothered with a top 3 for each category, but there were of course, lots of other great TV programmes, films and music from this year. There’s a longer playlist at the end with 25 of the best singles and album tracks from the year for y’all.

Best Album

3. Colours by Beck

2. MASSEDUCTION by St. Vincent

1. Melodrama by Lorde (gloriously unapologetic pop, whilst remaining beautiful, dramatic and intimate)

Lorde-Melodrama-1500x1000

Best Song

3. Everything Now by Arcade Fire

2. Tomorrow by Anni

1. New York by St. Vincent (my only criticism of this song is that it’s far too short.)

Best Film

3. Dunkirk/The Last Jedi (couldn’t decide between those two)

2. Trainspotting 2

1. Lion (released at the beginning of 2017 in the UK and I’m still reeling from the fact it didn’t walk away with the Oscar for Best Picture quite frankly. Read more about how this film made me feel here)

Best TV Programme

3. Stranger Things

2. The Crown

1. Master of None (actual perfectionism)

That’s mine. You know the score, now tell me yours.

I enjoyed Master of None, though it wouldn’t have won out in my rankings. I still haven’t seen any of the movies you’ve listed. I need to get out more.

Ha. Oh I strongly recommend Lion. Clearly. I won’t go on about it though as don’t want to ruin it for you.

Totally agree with The Crown and Stranger Things, but haven’t seen Master of None (although it’s in my Netflix list). A few of mine –

Returning series – I enjoyed the second season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency more than the first.
Limited series – Alias Grace was intense and unexpectedly good.
New series – American Gods far exceeded my hopes, and I can’t wait for the second season.

    Excellent choices, dearest girl!

Ooh I haven’t seen any of those, so will add them to my list! I also loved Handmaid’s Tale, so I’m kinda assuming I’ll like Alias Grace. Cheers!

I just recently heard Lorde’s album, and I love it! I’ve basically been listening to it nonstop for the last week. I also really liked Master of None this season, but I’d have to disagree with it being number one for me. I think the best shows I’ve watched this year were Mindhunter and This is Us– although I’ve heard The Crown is fab!

Oh I’ve heard great things about those, but I haven’t watched either. Added to my ever extending list! That Lorde’s album is just fantastic! So good.

Loved Lion, I read the book first and then watched the movie. Remarkable story that I remembered watching a few years ago on 60 Minutes here in Australia. One lucky boy!

Your post made me very aware that I live under a rock. I did see Stranger Things, which is awesome. And I saw The Last Jedi. But other than that-crickets. I haven’t bought an album in forever, though have been enjoying my Pandora station with lots of The 1975s. I have seen NO other movies. Books, now that’s something else. Do you have a favorite book roundup forthcoming? Because I would say your picks, Irrisistable AND Homegoing made my top 10.

With music, I’ve been a bit out of it in recent years, so I made a concerted effort to get into current music again this year. Am so glad I did as discovered loads of great new albums. I didn’t think I’d read enough books actually published in 2017, so didn’t think it would be fair for me to select 3. However, Homegoing is definitely my favourite from this year. Cheers Angela x

Great point– I wasn’t thinking about just published in 2017. That’s actually a good idea for a goal for myself: read just released books. I never do that, and I definitely should.

Although, in my final book review for this year, I’ll be listing extra books that I’ve enjoyed reading this year, so I guess there will be some kind of list then x

Pleased to see MoN here! I thought the ‘I love NY’ episode alone was one of the best I’ve ever seen from TV.

Basically a perfect TV episode. I adored it. Lovely tribute to NYC too.

  8. I absolutely loved Master of None. By the time I was in season 2 I was transfixed on the characters and I miss them still since season 3 isn’t promised to us. I still need to watch The Crown and I’m ashamed in myself that I actually haven’t start it yet. I agree with you on Beck as well. Phenomenal. Love this post and so happy I found your blog!

Yay! Thank you so much. I adore MoN and I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t come back, which would be a great shame. The characters were indeed very strong. Thanks for stopping by.
