Recently, on Twitter someone asked what songs make you cry? I immediately thought of the song that makes me cry like no other, but I then thought of so many more that render me pretty useless, sobbing like the emotional nightmare that I am. As I wrote about the 15 films that make me cry like a baby HERE, I thought I’d do a similar post with songs. For me, nothing evokes emotion more than music. Some of these songs are here for no other reason than they are emotional songs that make me cry and some are here because they have very personal reasons attached to them. I was going to write about why I selected each song, but then I realised it wouldn’t make for the most cheerful of posts. So, I’ll just simply leave the selected songs here.

Mine is “when I die young” by the band perry. It was released a few months after A friend of mine was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, and it still gets me! Almost every single time.

Oh I am so very sorry to hear that. That must’ve been so awful for you. I’m not surprised that song is so emotive for you. God, the power music can has over us and our emotions.

Yes, exactly! So much power! But thankfully also in a good way, like this morning I spent the last hour dancing around to music in the kitchen while cleaning. Now I’m all set for a good mood day haha

I’d never heard of Staind before, so I had to go check them out and I can definitely see why that song makes you have a good cry! You wouldn’t want to listen to it if you’ve just been through a break-up that’s for sure!

Hallelujah gets me every time. It almost doesn’t matter which artist sings it so long as it’s soulful. I always imagine someone realizing life is hard, unpredictable, terrible and beautiful all at the same time. It feels true, brutal and hopeful. Which is no unreasonable reflection of the world, I think.
Winter by Tori is also a sobber for sure.

YES! Hallelujah is another good one. Yes that definitely brings on the tears for me too. I’m team Jeff Buckley when it comes to which version, but you’re right it doesn’t really matter who sings it.

Totally with you on the P!nk song, Who Knew, it gets me every time. Massive Attack’s Teardrop gets me too, ever since it was played at a friend’s funeral, and there are songs that remind me of my best mate that I just can’t listen to, like the Manics A Design For Life or Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. Sob!

Thanks for this – never heard Tori Amos’s one – it’s really beautiful. There are loads of songs for me: ‘I don’t like Mondays’ by The Boomtown Rats, ‘One More Light’ by Linkin Park, ‘I can’t make you love me’ by George Michael (I know he covers it – and he also covers ‘if you were my woman’ which I love, ‘First Cut is the Deepest’ by Rod Stewart, ‘Love Will Tear us Apart’ by Joy Division and one I can never ever listen to without crying my eyes out ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by Abba..
Just remembered ‘Ruby, don’t take your love to town’ by Kenny Rodgers. Sooo many…oh and ‘Saturday Boy’ by Billy Bragg….I never made the first team, I just made the first team laugh’. Crikey. I’m an emotional wreck now.:)
