Top 15 Tunes That Make Me Sob Like a Baby

Recently, on Twitter someone asked what songs make you cry? I immediately thought of the song that makes me cry like no other, but I then thought of so many more that render me pretty useless, sobbing like the emotional nightmare that I am. As I wrote about the 15 films that make me cry like a baby HERE, I thought I’d do a similar post with songs. For me, nothing evokes emotion more than music. Some of these songs are here for no other reason than they are emotional songs that make me cry and some are here because they have very personal reasons attached to them. I was going to write about why I selected each song, but then I realised it wouldn’t make for the most cheerful of posts. So, I’ll just simply leave the selected songs here.

15. They Won’t Go When I Go by George Michael

14. Hurt by Johnny Cash

13. Winter by Tori Amos

12. Stay Another Day by East 17

11. When I Die by Lush

10. Who Knew by P!nk

9. Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel

(Bloody Watership Down)

8. The Whole of the Moon by the Waterboys

7. Breathe Me by Sia

6. E.T. theme tune

5. This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush

4. Memory from the Cats soundtrack

3. Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins

2. Distant Sky by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

And the song that makes me cry like no other is…

.

.

1. When I Grow Up from the Matilda soundtrack

Exhibit A: the lyrics “When I grow up, I will eat sweets everyday” (oh the pureness of it)

Exhibit B: the lyrics “When I grow up, I will be brave enough, to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night, to be a grown up

God damn you Tim Minchin *waves fist at air*

The One That Almost Made It: Creep by Scala & Kolacny Brother

This kind of list, is always going to be subjective and obviously very personal, so tell me which tearjerkers would make your list in the comments below.

See you on 12th April for Just Another Monthly #3

Mine is “when I die young” by the band perry. It was released a few months after A friend of mine was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, and it still gets me! Almost every single time.

Oh I am so very sorry to hear that. That must’ve been so awful for you. I’m not surprised that song is so emotive for you. God, the power music can has over us and our emotions.

Yes, exactly! So much power! But thankfully also in a good way, like this morning I spent the last hour dancing around to music in the kitchen while cleaning. Now I’m all set for a good mood day haha

YAY! Good for you! Music is definitely and equally responsible for lifting the mood too.

  2. Tangled up in you by Staind. I am crying just thinking about it, it’s a good cry though.

I’d never heard of Staind before, so I had to go check them out and I can definitely see why that song makes you have a good cry! You wouldn’t want to listen to it if you’ve just been through a break-up that’s for sure!

We are back on track, every single one of those reduces me to years.
Thought I might add a couple Five for Fighting 100 years

    Firework Katy Perry

    In my life, Beatles.

Alanis Morissette, In Praise Of The Vunerable Man ,

Like you I could go on 😟

Hallelujah gets me every time. It almost doesn’t matter which artist sings it so long as it’s soulful. I always imagine someone realizing life is hard, unpredictable, terrible and beautiful all at the same time. It feels true, brutal and hopeful. Which is no unreasonable reflection of the world, I think.
Winter by Tori is also a sobber for sure.

YES! Hallelujah is another good one. Yes that definitely brings on the tears for me too. I’m team Jeff Buckley when it comes to which version, but you’re right it doesn’t really matter who sings it.

    Music is just the best/worst thing for emotion isn’t it? So many songs break my heart in pieces, but to narrow it down to 5 that span different genres, these are some personal guaranteed tear-jerkers;
Rock n Roll Suicide – David Bowie
When You Wish Upon A Star – Disney
    Fragile – Nine Inch Nails
    Vincent – Don McLean
Somewhere Only We Know – Keane
Love some of your choices, although there are some new introductions there for me to discover. 🙂

You know about my sobbing to Winter, but Daughters by John Major gets me every time–also, I agree with Lockwood about Somewhere Only We Know:-)

I hadn’t heard of that Daughters song, so I had a listen and can see why it makes you cry!

Especially the part about boys–I always think, “No–you shouldn’t break them!”

Totally with you on the P!nk song, Who Knew, it gets me every time. Massive Attack’s Teardrop gets me too, ever since it was played at a friend’s funeral, and there are songs that remind me of my best mate that I just can’t listen to, like the Manics A Design For Life or Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. Sob!

I hear you! Who Knew reminds me of my friend I lost too. It’s just too much hearing some songs, isn’t it?

Thanks for this – never heard Tori Amos’s one – it’s really beautiful. There are loads of songs for me: ‘I don’t like Mondays’ by The Boomtown Rats, ‘One More Light’ by Linkin Park, ‘I can’t make you love me’ by George Michael (I know he covers it – and he also covers ‘if you were my woman’ which I love, ‘First Cut is the Deepest’ by Rod Stewart, ‘Love Will Tear us Apart’ by Joy Division and one I can never ever listen to without crying my eyes out ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by Abba..

Just remembered ‘Ruby, don’t take your love to town’ by Kenny Rodgers. Sooo many…oh and ‘Saturday Boy’ by Billy Bragg….I never made the first team, I just made the first team laugh’. Crikey. I’m an emotional wreck now.:)

Oh I love that Billy Bragg line! Love all your suggestions. Music can be so emotive, isn’t it? That’s when you know, it’s a good ‘un. Cheers x
