In 2007, protests were held in India against the treatment of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty by fellow contestants in British reality show Celebrity Big Brother, BBC correspondent Alan Johnston is kidnapped in the Gaza Strip and was released 4 months later, a fire badly damages the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, Tony Blair steps down as Prime Minister and Gordon Brown becomes the new British PM, a smoking ban comes into effect in England and Wales banning smoking in any enclosed public places, foot and mouth disease breaks out in the UK, 11-year-old Rhys Jones is shot dead in Liverpool, Nick Clegg becomes the leader of the Liberal Democratics party, the first ever iPhone is introduced, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto is assassinated, a terrorist attack takes place at Glasgow airport and 5 people were injured, the final Harry Potter book is published, films There Will Be Blood, The Bourne Ultimatum, No Country for Old Men, Juno, Hot Fuzz and La Vie En Rose are all released and I turn 31 years old.

In 2007, I packed my bags (again, I seem to pack my bags a lot over the years) and moved to New York, New York for a summer, where I was lucky enough to train at AADA (American Academy of Dramatic Arts) in acting, singing and dancing. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life and I made very special friends for life. And I still from time to time pine for New York. I just need to win the lottery, so I can buy that holiday apartment in NYC. This week, we have Amy featuring twice and Ri-Ri and Regina return plus it’s the first appearance from another iconic British singer.

6. Umbrella by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z (Umbrella was no.1 in the UK for 10 consecutive weeks and in some kind of sickened twist this was over the summer of ’07 where in the UK we had weeks upon weeks of non-stop rain causing flooding across the country. The weather in the UK had been good the day before the record was released, but from the day of its release the severe weather hit the UK. The UK started to blame this ark-building weather on Rihanna as the wet weather and Rihanna’s reign over the charts continued, it was thus named the “Rihanna Curse”. In the end, her record company were savvy and collaborated with a UK umbrella firm and produced the Rihanna branded umbrella. Sick)

7. Call the Shots by Girls Aloud (how has it taken me so long to put a Girls Aloud song in these lists?!)

8. I Still Remember by Bloc Party

9. Back to Black by Amy Winehouse

OMG 2007 was amazeballs. Sorry! I was in sixth form and it was just one of the best years ever and I love love love every song in this list! I might have to plump for Kate Nash as my fave though as she’s so underrated.

Also the Rihanna raining thing is so true it absolutely lashed it down for bloody weeks and she was number 1 FOREVER.

Aah excellent! SO glad you love this list. I love it too. 2007 was a brilliant year for me too. Bloody Rihanna- she ruined that whole summer haha. Love Kate Nash too. That whole album is so good. I saw her live at the end of 2007 and she was brilliant.

Wow, forget the music I was more interested in that you went to Art School in New York for a summer. Hayley, what an amazing experience to have done. Love it!

I was living in the UK for this period- loved Kate Nash. The kids in Essex were daft about her

That story about Umbrella is hilarious! But perfection for her releasing the song. I remember this year well – I was 20 and in the midst of my clubbing days. Umbrella was one of the songs we all loved to dance to! Still do actually haha

Lol I wasn’t in the UK in 2007, so I didn’t know about the “Rihanna Curse.” That is hilarious (although you must have all been pissed off to miss out on sunburn and bbqs!!)

Ha well luckily for me I wasn’t in the U.K. either & enjoyed a very hot summer elsewhere, but man did I hear about it haha. Is this when you were in Japan?

Yep. I was there until 2008. But most of these songs still made it onto my radar…I just didn’t know them when they first came out(!)

p.s. I knew you were in New York, but it didn’t quite register!!

I do like that Kanye West track, but he’s such a blecky personality, I have a hard time picking him. But, let me just tell you, I’ve never listened to Kate Nash before, at least to the best of my knowledge. BUT–WHAT A DELIGHT!! I really really like her. Now I want more.
That picture of your New York friends makes me wish I knew you when. The truth is I probably wouldn’t have been cool enough to hang out with you. But, seeing the pictures makes me think just maybe, we could have run from bar to bar and possibly danced on a table or two.

Eurgh Kanye is, what we would say over here, a “twat”. I love that Graduation album so much. I try to detach the music from the person, but I haven’t been able to post-Graduation. Yay- I’m so glad you liked the sound of Kate Nash. I thoroughly recommend her Made of Bricks album. She has a very British sound, so that’s great you like her. Do you watch the Netflix show “Glow”? She plays the British character in that.
Oh you would’ve most definitely been cool enough for me! I’m lucky that I have cool friends, but I myself am decidedly uncool. I’m like the token uncool friend. I would have absolutely loved to run from bar to bar with you in NYC. That sounds like an awesome night!

I did watch a few episodes of Glow–I don’t remember the British girl, but now will have to go back and check it out again.
The more I think about cool/uncool the more I think cool is being utterly and unapologetically oneself.
